Dr. James Kempton- Oxford University

“Without Yappenda, I do not think Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna would have been found. For Expedition Cyclops, the research mission to rediscover the echidna, YAPPENDA acted as the bridge between organisations and communities at local and international scales. Through their knowledge of the politics, customs, manners, and bureaucracy of both the western and local worlds, they ensured the effective collaboration between the University of Oxford, Indonesia’s Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Papua BBKSDA , Universitas Cenderwasih (UNCEN), Re:wild and the community of Yongsu Sapari .”

Wes Sechrest, PhD, Re:wild CEO & board chair

"YAPPENDA is committed to exploring and preserving the unique natural and cultural diversity of Papua. YAPPENDA is also invaluable as an advocate and liaison for Papuans, connecting them with resources that empower their communities to protect Papuan landscapes. Their work aligns perfectly with Re:wild's mission, we are proud to partner with YAPPENDA in their conservation work. Together, we can preserve our planet's valuable ecosystems and enable a new generation of conservationists."

Wilson, E.O.. (2012). Foreword in Ecology of Indonesian Papua

PAPUA HAS LASTED into the twenty-first century as largely a blank space on the map, and we will do well to treasure it for that. Here for the last time in history, as human modernity closes irreversibly over the planet, we may take comfort that there still exists a land "beyond the frontier" such as Papua.
