Building Community

Our Programs

  • Protecting primary forest

YAPPENDA is enabling Papuan’s to protect over 1 million hectares of forest through formal recognition of land rights and community led management of these lands. YAPPENDA is providing support, expertise and advocacy as a liaison between these communities, local government and external partners.

  • Education and learning

Ensuring access to education for Papuan children through provision of elementary education. Partnering with Sekolah Lentera Harapan and YAPELIN in Holuwon village, Yahukimo.

YAPPENDA is delivering conservation focused training and education for adults and children in dozens of villages and parishes. Emphasizing conservation through an understanding of ecology, effects of deforestation and plastic waste.

Creation of a learning and research center that enshrines indigenous culture and values, and provides an opportunity to record and celebrate indigenous knowledge and customs, enhancing cultural preservation

  • Conservation research

YAPPENDA believes research is an invaluable tool for developing a better understanding of Tanah Papua’s biodiversity and informing effective policy development as it relates to conservation in Papua. We have MOU’s with UNCEN (University Cenderawasih), UNIPA (University of West Papua) and Oxford University. We have successfully utilized these partnerships to support and lead biodiversity survey expeditions.

  • Restoration and reforestation

YAPPENDA has developed reforestation projects in and around the Cyclops Mountains, the Bailem Valley near Wamena and in the Heluk River Valley of Yahukimo Regency. We have 6 operational tree nurseries, one of which is mangrove exclusive.

Our goal is to restore 2700 ha of important watershed and culturally important land through habitat restoration that ensures access to clean water, reduction of erosion and prevention of landslides.

“YAPPENDA is developing indigenous community-led projects that incorporate sustainable and long-term integrated forest, water, livelihood, and cultural restoration for at least three key biodiversity areas.”
